Population and culture of Darjeeling



Lepchas are the original inhabitants of the Darjeeling Hills. Their origin is doubtful but they are Mongolians in features. The Khampas, another branch of the Lepchas, are recent immigrants from Tibet. Gorkhas form a greater bulk of the people in the Hills. This industrious and enterprising race speaks various dialects. These short and Mongolian type Nepalese are famous for their military prowess in the world. They traditionally carry the Khukri, a curved ornamental knife. Among the population are also the Newars or Sherpas who are well known for their courage and stamina and also for their immeasurable contributions to Mountaineering. Bhutias are also in the significant numbers in the hills. They are divided into Tibet, Bhutan, Dharma and Sikkimese Bhutias. A greater bulk of Bengalis from Siliguri subdivision is also part of the population.
The Nepalese have rich folk culture. The hills and valleys are the treasure house of songs and dances of the hill folk which are the inseparable part of their life.
